The School District of Reedsburg owns a total of 350 acres in Sauk County. Included in this total are seven school campuses as well as two school forests. Our Buildings and Grounds Department is responsible for providing a safe and clean learning environment at all of these locations.

District Buildings, Grounds and School Forests

The schools consist of two elementary buildings, one intermediate school, one middle school, and one high school. Our school forests, the Hartje Outdoor Learning Center, and the Romoren School Forest represent a combined total of 208 acres of open space. Both are open to the public as well as used for educational purposes. A network of hiking trails is maintained at the Hartje Center, which has proven to be a popular area for walkers, hikers, and nature lovers.

In addition to our district schools, the Buildings and Grounds Department is responsible for maintaining many additional buildings. These include everything from the Central Office Building to storage buildings located throughout the district.

The department also oversees 129 acres of sports fields, physical education grounds, lawn space, walking trails, and parking lots.

The team has a total of 28 employees. Since 1991, the School District of Reedsburg has contracted with ARAMARK Education Services to manage the department.

Custodial Team

A team of over 20 custodians work together to clean more than 469,256 square feet of interior space throughout the district each week. The average square footage per custodian per week is 22,346 square feet. A city block is a total of 69,696 square feet. That is 6.7 city blocks per week that are cleaned by our Custodial team. We strive to create a safe and clean environment for the children and employees of this district. In addition to these cleaning duties, the custodial group is also responsible for transporting food, mail, and supplies around the district and overseeing and supporting the use of facility resources by outside groups.

Maintenance Department

The maintenance team comprises five individuals who perform much of the preventive and corrective work that goes on in the district. Their goal is to ensure that various essential systems, such as heating and cooling air exchanges, operate at peak efficiency.

10-Year Capital Improvement Plan

The School District of Reedsburg maintains a 10-Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) in order to plan for future facility maintenance or improvement projects proactively. Our district includes five school buildings that were built between 1950-2019, making it imperative that the District monitor short-term and long-term maintenance and capital improvement needs.

The CIP is part of the Board’s long-term facilities planning work and the District's tactical work under the Strategic Plan's Focus Area of Responsible Fiscal Management.  

Key Points of Plan:

  1. A 10-Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is a fiscal management tool used to plan for the location, timing, and financing of capital improvements over multiple years.  It is a schedule of proposed maintenance and replacement of aging buildings, systems, and equipment.
  2. This is Version 1.0 of the District’s 10-Year CIP. This version does not include any proposed new buildings or renovations related to modern learning environments.
  3. The 10-Year CIP is a pretty extensive list of both updates to building systems, equipment, and vehicles, such as buses.  It includes items that have been identified in our current Building Improvement Projects budget, recommended updates identified by Aramark in their facilities condition assessment report, and other items identified by buildings and grounds staff.
  4. Adoption of this 10-Year CIP is not a firm commitment to any particular project or purchase of equipment.
  5. The costs for each item are estimates for planning purposes. 
  6. This document will be fluid. During this next year, as the Board continues its long-term facilities planning work, possibly identifying projects and putting together priorities and timelines, this document will be revised to reflect any of those decisions. 
  7. The 10-Year CIP will be updated annually going forward as part of the budget process.
