Last Updated March 5, 2025 - The Board of Education for the School District of Reedsburg is excited to announce the appointment of Tom Burkhalter as the next Superintendent, effective July 1, 2025.
Tom Burkhalter currently serves as the superintendent of Viroqua Area Schools and has worked for VAS since 2020. Before this role, he worked in the Clintonville School District for two years as an elementary principal and one year as the associate middle school principal and athletic director. His other administrative experience includes being a parochial school principal in Independence, Wis., and dean of students in both Princeton and Waupun School Districts. Burkhalter began his career as an FCS instructor for Columbus and Fall River High Schools.
On becoming the new superintendent in Reedsburg, Burkhalter stated, "I am honored to serve as the next superintendent of the School District of Reedsburg. Having grown up in Union Center, Reedsburg was always the 'big city' where we did our shopping. My wife (Kim) and I, along with our three sons, Will (11), Owen (9), and Jake (5), are excited to become part of this wonderful community. I've spent my career focused on building strong schools through clear communication, community engagement, and student-centered leadership. As superintendent for Viroqua Area Schools for the past five years, I worked closely with staff and families, improved district communication, and ensured access to important community resources. I look forward to bringing that same commitment to collaboration and transparency to Reedsburg."
Burkhalter earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, his principal licensure from Marian University, and his superintendent licensure from Edgewood College. He will complete his doctorate from Edgewood College later this year.

Burkhalter will officially begin his duties as superintendent on July 1, 2025, and Dr. Roger Rindo will continue until his retirement on June 30, 2025.

The School District of Reedsburg Board of Education is conducting a superintendent search. In December 2024, Superintendent Roger Rindo, Ed.D. announced would retire at the end of the school year, June 30, 2025.

The Board of Education for the School District of Reedsburg is excited to announce the selection of three finalists who will be interviewed for the position of Superintendent. The Board recently conducted interviews with a strong group of qualified candidates and has narrowed the selection down to three finalists:
- Tom Burkhalter, current superintendent of Viroqua Area Schools
- Stephen Considine, current interim superintendent for the School District of Baraboo and the principal of Baraboo High School
- Ron Rivard, current principal and curriculum director of Randall Consolidated School District J1
Tom Burkhalter currently serves as the superintendent of Viroqua Area Schools and has worked for VAS since 2020. Stephen Considine is currently serving as the interim superintendent for the Baraboo School District and has served as Baraboo High School principal since July 2023. Prior to that he was the assistant principal and athletic director for Lake Mills High School for four years. Considine got his start in the teaching profession at Randolph High School as a social studies teacher, where he worked for two years before moving to Baraboo, Wis.where he worked for five years as a social studies teacher at the middle school. Considine also served as the head coach for the Baraboo High School Baseball team. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a master’s of education from St. Mary’s University-Minnesota, and his superintendent licensure from Edgewood College.
Ron Rivard has served as the principal and curriculum director for Randall Consolidated School District J1 for the past three years. Before that role, he spent seven years in the School District of South Milwaukee as both an elementary school principal and a high school associate principal. Rivard served two years as a director of instruction at the School District of Waukesha and two years as a director of curriculum and instruction for the Waterford Graded School District. His administrative roles began at Muskego Norway School District, where he served as a middle school associate principal for three years and an elementary school principal for 6 years. Rivard earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, his principal and director of instruction licensure from Cardinal Stritch University, and his superintendent licensure from Cardinal Stritch and Concordia Universities.
Day in the District:
The Board of Education will hold a Day in the District on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, for the superintendent finalists. The Day in the District will include a tour of District schools and an opportunity for administrators, staff, students, families, parents, and community members to meet with each finalist that day.
PLAN TO ATTEND - All interested families, parents, and community members are invited to attend a meet and greet session with each finalist on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. at Reedsburg Area High School in the CAL Center.
The meet and greet will be moderated by a representative from Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates, the search firm hired by the Board of Education to assist with the superintendent search. On Wednesday, February 26, the Board of Education will complete final interviews with each finalist. They hope to select a candidate by mid-March with a start date of July 1, 2025.

The School District of Reedsburg is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Sauk County, WI; approximately 60 miles northwest of Madison and is the fastest growing community in Sauk County. In November, 2024, our community passed a $14 million referendum for capital improvements to the high school in two phases. The first (2025), will renovate the library, large group room, and two adjacent classrooms to create the new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and lightly renovate the commons area with an add school store in the space. The second phase (2026), is for improvements to our High School Construction Trades, Manufacturing and Engineering, and Agriculture spaces; and a new greenhouse and provide space for new and innovative programs in Agriculture, Animal Science, and Natural Resources.

The City of Reedsburg (pop. 10,246) offers a quality of life that is second to none. Filled with an array of activities and events for individuals and families, the city is surrounded by breathtaking farmland and great recreational opportunities, and is known for its wonderful small-town charm. Lake Virginia is a small lake on the east side of Reedsburg. Lake Redstone and Dutch Hollow Lake are two reservoirs located in the nearby town of La Valle. Babb Creek, Hay Creek, and Copper Creek, tributaries of the Baraboo River, all flow through Reedsburg.
Reedsburg has a rich agricultural history and an impressive industrial park, as well as a growing arts and culture scene. Reedsburg has 18 parks within the city. Reedsburg is a vibrant, growing and progressive community with a unique history and many interesting features including a 4-square block “campus” in the historic downtown area that features friendly shops and great food as well as lodging, entertainment, municipal and professional services. This area is a favorite walking route among residents and is also adjacent to our popular “400” State Trail, noted for being the prettiest bike trail in Wisconsin.
